Welcome to Mighty Region I
On behalf of the Seventeen Student National Medical Association (SNMA) chapters in California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, and Arizona, welcome to Region I! My name is Daniel Woolridge and I am the 2016-2018 Regional Director, responsible for assisting the SNMA National Office and local chapters in carrying out the mission of the SNMA.
Founded in 1964 by medical students from Howard University School of Medicine and Meharry Medical College, the SNMA is the nation’s oldest and largest, independent, student-run organization focused on the needs and concerns of medical students of color. Organized in over 130 chapters across the nation, the SNMA membership includes over 5000 medical students, pre-medical students and physicians. SNMA is dedicated to increasing the number of African-American, Latino, and other students of color entering and completing medical school and to assisting in the eradication of racial and ethnic health disparities. SNMA community service and mentoring programs provide science appreciation, health care education, mentoring, and academic enrichment to elementary, junior high school, high school and college students interested in pursuing health-related careers.
Region I is large and diverse, with chapters across ten states on and around the west coast. Many of these chapters already do outstanding work on their respective campuses, while other chapters in their region are newly active and eager to join the larger SNMA community. To continue the strong work of our established chapters and foster novel initiatives at newer chapters, Region I will continue its focus on collaboration between regional schools and other underrepresented-in-medicine organizations through joint ventures, funding for traveling to SNMA business both on the regional and national level, and fostering of advocacy efforts that promote well-being of regional and national constituents. Also, by expanding our online presence and recruiting new MAPS and local chapters, we will continue to build and strengthen our region.
We are always looking for dedicated individuals to help carry out the mission of SNMA. If you are interested in serving Region I, please click the “Leadership” tab and then click the “Meet the Regional Executive Board” link. You will find a link to the email address for each officer. If you have any questions or comments, would like to start a chapter at your osteopathic or allopathic medical school in Region I, or find out how to support SNMA and our mission, please feel free to contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Yours in SNMA,
