UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland Diversity Scholars Program (DSP)

What is DSP?

The Diversity Scholarship Program (DSP) is an initiative created by the office of Graduate Medical Education at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital of Oakland (UBCHO). The purpose of the scholarship is to increase the number of highly qualified underrepresented in medicine (see definition below) applicants to the UBCHO pediatric residency program. Recipients will be given the opportunity to complete a month-long rotation between August and January of their 4th year. The rotation will take place at a UBCHO (inpatient and/or outpatient). Students will also have close contact with attending and resident physicians, who can provide mentorship with regard to applying to pediatric residency.

Who can apply?

The program is designed to accommodate two rising 4th year medical students of ethnic groups underrepresented in medicine. The AAMC defines underrepresented in medicine as:

“…those racial and ethnic populations that are underrepresented in the medical profession relative to their numbers in the general population.”

What does DSP provide?

Scholarship recipients will receive a stipend of $2,000 per student and will have their rotation fee waived. They will also receive free parking and a $100 cafeteria meal credit to be used over the course of the month.

How do I apply?
